Homes for Sale in Brookhaven
City of Brookhaven
Incorporated: December 17, 2012
Located in DeKalb County, approximately 10 miles Northeast of Atlanta
In 2012, Brookhaven became DeKalb County’s 11th and largest city. Located in the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta, in western DeKalb County, Brookhaven covers 12 square miles and is bounded by the Fulton County line to the west, I-85 to the south, Clairmont Road and the city of Chamblee at Chamblee Dunwoody Road to the east, and the city of Dunwoody at I-285 to the north.
Although it is a newly incorporated city, Brookhaven is one of Atlanta’s largest — and wealthiest — suburbs. It’s rich in heritage and culture as well, offering a number of restaurants and arts and entertainment venues among its various neighborhoods.
In the center of historic Brookhaven is Capital City Country Club, which makes Brookhaven the first community in Georgia, and probably the Southeast, that was built around a golf course. Efforts to retain the old-growth trees that graced the Brookhaven area, particularly pines, set a precedent that was followed by many of Atlanta’s post-World War II housing developments.
Residential neighborhoods in Brookhaven include Ashford Park and Drew Valley. North Brookhaven is home to Blackburn Park, Murphey Candler Park (the largest park in DeKalb County, with 135 acres), and the Nancy Creek Trail, a scenic greenway built by the PATH Foundation.
To help residents and visitors appreciate the city and its beautiful parks, the City of Brookhaven holds an annual spring Cherry Blossom Festival as well as other community festivals and music and cultural events throughout the year.
Brookhaven is home to outstanding public and private schools from K-12, as well as two college campuses: Oglethorpe University, a private liberal arts college, and Georgia State University’s Brookhaven satellite campus. For a complete list of schools, click here.
